Love this label - designed by Max Kaplun - for a limited run Belgium Ale commemorating the famed cyclist Briek Schotte. Sadly it was only on the US market this past summer.

bikes + Russel Wright's Manitoga

I had previously admired the bike racks at Russel Wright's Manitoga located 60 miles north of the city of Garrison, NY and on my most recent visit last month I was thrilled to spot these bicycles locked up to it!If not already familiar to you... Russel Wright is the mid-century modern industrial designer who is most famous for his signature dinnerware, philosophy of good design is for everyone, and also designed spun aluminum dining accessories, furniture and textiles. Manitoga ('Place of the Great Spirit' in Algonquin) is his dreamy studio and home integrated into a rocky moss filled forest accompanied by 75 acres of designed landscape which links to the Appalachian Trail. A peak via DWR Design Notes...
And by complete coincidence, I recently attended Leslie Williamson's presentation hosted at USM on her new fantastically lovely book 'Handcrafted Modern' - a collection of interior photographs of many highly influential mid-century designers' homes (Nakashima, Gropius, Zeisel, the Eames...). And lo and behold Russel Wright is included!

718 CYCLERY - a new bike shop in South Slope
718 CYCLERY, INC staff is super friendly and appear to offer quite a lot.. the most unique being Collaborative Builds which they describe as "providing the ability to learn to become the master of your bike" - they will build up a bike WITH you so you learn the in's and out's of your bike and how to maintain it yourself. You can either bring in a frame you have or buy one from them - the shop deals primarily in steel vintage road frames from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, but also works with new frames (I spotted a beautiful CASATI frame in there - which was already called for).
Photos from their collaborative build gallery - the owner had been working for years out of his home...

Who could asked for a better addition to the neighborhood?!Yip Yip Hurray!

it always feels like a party w/ streamers

Loved spotting this {purple} bike locked up to scaffolding w/ {purple} streamers nicely strung up in SoHo the other day. It conjured images of the sassy team at CONFETTI SYSTEM going guerrilla-style...

hello Horse Cycles + one lucky momma

Last Spring I met Thomas Callahan, of Williamsburg-based Horse Cycles, at the Bike Block Party where he had his exquisite collection of custom hand built bicycles on display... and recently spotted (and could not take my eyes off of) this candy apple red beauty which Thomas designed and built for none other then... his mother! The step through frame includes hand carved and modified lugs, 8 speed internal Alfine hub with bar end shifters...I really wanted to make something low impact my mom could be active on while still being super comfortable. Also, I wanted to make it as functional as possible. I put a lot of love and time into the bike as i love my momma! So great to see such a friendly bike - double leg stand and rear rack included. You can check out more of Horse Cycles' builds/process here!
